Senior Spotlight: Max Debiec
As the WIAA released information about getting back to high school sports, Debiec found both of his sports occurring at the same time in an unusual modified calendar. If it was even an option, it would be a challenge. Basketball was the hobby for Debiec, baseball was the passion… but having the opportunity to play both, and play both at an exceptionally high level, was something he couldn’t refuse.
“I knew it was probably my last opportunity to play basketball ever in my life. I wanted to show up and be a leader for both teams…. I wanted my teammates to be able to depend on me.”
With the support and blessing of his coaches, Debiec was able to successfully compete in both sports simultaneously.
“It’s been crazy, super busy during the week…. with both games and practices every day. Recovery became super important…. sleeping and icing a lot.” The dedication and responsibility devoted to each team along with the time spent on the school, at the field, traveling between the two, maintaining a 3.7GPA, taking honors classes and serving as a Student Ambassador, Debiec has a full plate.
“Max’s enthusiasm and energy throughout the season has been outstanding and I admire his dedication to both the baseball and basketball programs! It’s been exciting to see him on the diamond and we’re looking forward to se where his career takes him after O’Dea,” said Head Baseball Coach Mike Doyle.
“I thought about not doing both and just focusing on baseball, mainly to avoid injury, but decided to give it one more go. My coaches have been super supportive of my schedule and the opportunity to do both, letting me out early of practices to get to the next practice, understanding when my body needed to rest and understanding my limits.”
Following his graduation from O’Dea, Max plans to attend the University of Washington, play baseball for the Huskies, plans to continue onto the professional leagues. His dedication will continue to serve him well in life and we cannot wait to watch him thrive in the future!
