O'Dea Swim/Dive

Welcome to the O'Dea Swimming and Diving Homepage! Since 1992, O'Dea has developed into a team of champions who set high expectations and reach challenging goals with inner resolve and tenacity of spirit. In 2000, the Irish won the State Meet Title and have finished in the top four at State seven times since then. We have produced:

  • 11 Metro League Titles
  • seven State Champion Event Titles
  •  three State records
  • 15 Academic All-Americans
  • 17 All-American Athletes
  • Coach Tom Schutte was named High School Swimming “State Coach of the Year” in 2000, 2004, and 2011 and Metro League Coach of the Year five times.
  • Coach Schutte was inducted into the O'Dea Athletic Wall of Honor in 2010.
  • For the past several years, O'Dea swimming and diving has been ranked in the top 25 large independent schools in America.

O'Dea joins forces with Holy Names Academy at meets to make a coed team. Due to numbers, location, and scheduling, the two teams practice separately.

The Fighting Irish squad added diving as an exciting dimension of our program in 2001 with Paul Prociv breaking new ground as O'Dea's first state competitor in diving. We have two diving coaches, exceptional diving boards, and great enthusiasm to develop this piece of our program. In 2010, Max Nelson finished 8th at State in diving and was an exciting addition to our State team.

Brother Lindeman started the Irish swim program in the early 70's but after two seasons he was called to become principal and the team disbanded. Brother McDonald started it up again for the 1991-92 season and passed the Head Coach role to Tom Schutte from 1992-93 to the present.

O'Dea's Swimming and Diving teams look to continue their outstanding success of past years. The Swim Team utilizes "True Colors" psychological profile system to custom fit our coaching and motivation to the minds and inner character of each athlete. We have taken three Christmas training trips to the University of San Diego during the week after Christmas. In 2010, the team traveled to Central Washington University for a team Breakaway intra-squad tournament competitions and team building. Each trip has been a great experience to create a stronger team bond and to fine tune our aerobic engines for the championship seasons. We look forward to great things this year!
