2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly

Biographical Sketch of Rev. Marcus T. McCullough (O’Dea 2003):

On February 16, 2011, O’Dea welcomed back Reverend Marcus T. McCullough (O’Dea 2003), who spoke at the annual school-wide assembly honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although Marcus has been busy since graduating from O’Dea, he was also quite busy and involved in the life of our community during his four years with us. During his time at O’Dea, Marcus played in the pep and jazz bands for all four years. Significantly, in terms of his current career as a minister, he was an active member of the Social Justice Team and Campus Ministry, participating in 9 Encounter Retreats and serving as Rector of Encounter 55. Marcus was also elected to serve as Class President during both his sophomore and junior years. Ultimately, Marcus was elected to serve as ASB President during his senior year.

Marcus also made time for a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. An accomplished “grappler,” Marcus earned two varsity letters, while also receiving more than one Coaches’ Award for his wrestling skills. A scholar as well as an athlete, Marcus was also an active member of the National Honor Society. He also played an important role in founding the Black Students United for Excellence (BSUE) at O’Dea, serving as a charter member and President during his senior year. Finally, at graduation, Marcus was awarded the Archbishop Hunthausen Award for General Excellence.

After leaving O’Dea, Marcus attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, earning a B.A. in Religion, with a Minor in Political Science. In 2007, Marcus graduated from Morehouse Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. Next, Marcus attended Harvard University, studying the New Testament and Pastoral Care, graduating in 2010 with a Master of Divinity Degree.

Currently, Marcus serves the Seattle community as an ordained minister and elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, as well as serving as an associate minister in the First African Methodist Episcopal Church. Finally, Marcus is also a Clinical Pastoral Education Chaplin in residency at Harborview and the University of Washington Medical Centers.
