2/22/11 - State Tournament

Congratulations to the wrestlers for their outstanding performance at the State tournament on Friday and Saturday. In all, the Irish racked up 42 points, their highest total in 15 years! After the dust had settled on Friday, six wrestlers had scored and four earned spots in the “medal rounds” on Saturday. Cody Fulleton finished in 4th place, David Dempsey earned a 7th place, while Micah Englehart and Trenton Tibbetts came away with 8th place medals. Many thanks go out to the fans who made the trip to the Tacoma Dome over the two days. Good Job Grapplers!!

 

** O’Dea crowned another academic state champion this year. The wrestler with the highest accumulative g.p.a. for 3A in the state at 140 lbs is junior DOMINIC NICACIO. A true scholar/athlete!

 


 

2/14/11 - Region Champions

The O’Dea wrestlers subdued all Seamount and Metro challengers with a resounding 368.5 points (the next closest team had 140 points) to win the Region 2 tournament on Saturday. Ten Irish grapplers earned 1st place. These included: Torre Eaton, Zack Hamilton, Jake Portes, Gage Anderson, Aaron Turner, Dominic Nicacio, Athan Dumont, Micah Englehart, David Dempsey and Cody Fulleton. Second places were earned by: Kallum Broderick, Keegan Broderick, Justin Phillips and Trenton Tibbetts. Third place finishes went to Ivan Gaskin and J.J. Thornes. These 16 Irish wrestlers qualified for the State tournament. Fifth places were also won by Nate Turner and Nicco Fortes. They will join the team as alternates to State. Thanks go out to all the fans who came out to Kennedy High School to cheer on the Irish. See you at the Tacoma Dome on Friday and Saturday for Mat Classic XXIII.


 

2/7/11 - Metro Champions

Over the weekend, the O’Dea Irish Wrestlers secured their fifth Metro League title in a row by scoring 338 pts in the Metro Tournament. First places went to: Torre Eaton, Keegan Broderick, Zack Hamilton, Jake Portes, Gage Anderson, Dominic Nicacio, Athan Dumont, J.J. Thornes, David Dempsey, and Cody Fulleton. Second place finishes were earned by: Kallum Broderick, Justin Phillips and Aaron Turner. Third places went to: Nate Turner, Trenton Tibbetts and Micah Englehart. Ivan Gaskin, a first year wrestler, finished in fourth, Nicco Fortes battled to a 5th place finish and James Nguyen took 6th place. 130 lb wrestler, Jake Portes, was voted most valuable wrestler in the lower weight classes. All 19 wrestlers will compete in the Regional Tournament next Saturday at Kennedy High School. Thanks to the many O’Dea fans who showed up to cheer for the O’Dea grapplers.

 


 

1/24/11

Last week was busy for the grapplers. After dispatching Interlake 37 – 28 on Monday, the Irish celebrated their “Senior Night” last home match of the year with a 75 – 6 defeat of Eastside. Saturday, the wrestlers competed in the Renton Invitational taking 1st place over eleven other teams and scoring 179 points. Leading the way for O’Dea with 1st place medals were: Zack Hamilton, Jake Portes, and David Dempsey. Gage Anderson, Micah Englehart and Cody Fulleton finished in second. Torre Eaton and Dominic Nicacio captured third places. Aaron Turner and Keegan Broderick earned 4th places. A 5th place was garnered by Nate Turner; Ivan Gaskin and Nicco Fortes contributed by pinning their opponents.

 


 

1/14/11

O’Dea defeated Nathan Hale last night 80 – 0. Pins were tallied by: Torre Eaton, Sam Bell, Nate Turner, Gage Anderson, Dominic Nicacio (the masked-marvel), Athan Dumont, Micah Englehart, J.J. Thornes. Cody Fulleton’s fall occurred in just 17 seconds. Ivan Gaskin won in a wild melee, 12 – 8. Thanks go out to all the O’Dea fans who took a break from studying for finals or correcting tests to support the grapplers.

 


 

1/13/11

Wednesday night, the Irish defeated Ingraham 74 – 6. Quick pins, some in less than a minute, were recorded by; Cody Fulleton, Trenton Tibbetts, Aaron Turner, Niccolo Fortes, J.J. Thornes, Gage Anderson, Torre Eaton, Justin Phillips and Nate Turner. Athan Dumont made his opponent suffer through 5 minutes of torture before finally pinning him. Keegan Broderick scored a major decision with his 18 – 4 decision.

 


 

1/10/11

At the Shoreline Tournament on Saturday, the Irish battled to a 5th place finish. Leading the way with his first place finish was Micah Englehart. Ivan Gaskin finished in 2nd place; while Torre Eaton, Nate Turner, Justin Phillips, and Aaron Turner captured 3rd place medals. At the same time, a small crew of 8 wrestlers defeated 20 other teams at the Everett Classic to grab the first place trophy. In a feat of true teamwork, each O’Dea grappler earned points and bonus points in the tourney. Wrestling up a weight class, Keegan Broderick earned one win by pinning his second opponent. Athan Dumont grabbed a 3rd place with two pins. Zack Hamilton, Gage Anderson, J.J. Thornes and Cody Fulleton scored 2nd place points and added a grand total of ten pins and one “tech fall.” First places were earned by Jake Portes, and David Dempsey who combined for five more pins. All in all, it was great and challenging weekend for all of the Irish wrestlers. This week, the grapplers face off at Ingraham on Tuesday, and are at home against Nathan Hale on Thursday.

 


 

1/6/11

Vacation Highlights – O’Dea took 7th place at the tough Shelton Christmas Tournament. Cody Fulleton finished 2nd, while David Dempsey, Dominic Nicacio and Gage Anderson earned 3rd places. On December 30th, the Irish grapplers competed in the Eastside Catholic “Brian Hill” Tourney. Led by champions: Jake Portes, Dominic Nicacio, Gage Anderson, Zack Hamilton, and David Dempsey, and a 2nd place finish by Torre Eaton, O’Dea knocked down all competition and earned a 1st place trophy. Zack Hamilton was named outstanding wrestler for the lower weights.

 

In Dual match competition over Christmas break, the Irish wrestled well, but fell to Marysville-Pilchuk 33 – 44, and lost to Stanwood 35 – 45. Last night in league competition, O’Dea smothered Chief Sealth 75 – 6, and shut out Cleveland 84 – 0.

In wrestling action last night, the O’Dea grapplers successfully defended the homelands with victories over Rainier Beach (24 – 6) and Franklin (70 – 4). Pins were recorded by: Torre Eaton, the Broderick brothers – Kallum and Keegan, Chris Flora, Nate Turner, Justin Phillips, Dominic Dumas, Jake Portes, Trenton Tibbetts, Aaron Turner, Dominic Nicacio, Ivan Gaskin, Ben Wolfe, Micah Englehart, Nicco Fortes and, in 15 seconds flat, Cody Fulleton! Many thanks to the boisterous crowd of fans that included several alums: P.J. Pelligrini, Geoff Carlin, Terrence Seals, and special guest announcer Marcus McCullough.

 


 

12/15/10

After placing 4th in the Larry Brown Invitational Tourney on Saturday (1st Place earned by Jake Portes), the O’Dea wrestlers travelled to Blanchet on Monday. The JV’s led off with a resounding 41 – 16 victory over the Braves. Tallying pins for the Irish were: Justin Phillips, Aaron Turner, Trenton Tibbetts, Ben Wolfe, James Nguyen and Taylor Johnson; Chris Flora earned a technical fall with a 19 – 3 win. The Varsity picked up the intensity and defeated Blanchet by a score of 66 – 12 . Seven Irish grapplers pinned their opponents: Keegan Broderick, Zack Hamiliton, Nate Turner, Jake Portes, Gage Anderson, Ivan Gaskin, and J.J. Thornes. Athan Dumont battled back to dominate the third round of his match winning by an 8 – 6 score; Dominic Nicacio chalked up a major decision with a last second takedown; he won by a score of 12 – 4.

 


 

12/6/10

After defeating West Seattle on Thursday, 78 - 6, the Irish grapplers travelled to Cascade High School on Saturday to compete in the “Big Dog” Duals tournament. In pool competition, the wrestlers defeated the Renegades and Cascade, and lost to Klahowya, but still managed to finish in first place. In the cross-over finals against 4A Edmonds-Woodway, the Irish staged a dramatic comeback victory (pins by David Dempsey, Cody Fulleton, and the Broderick brothers Kallum and Keegan) to capture the first place “WOOF” trophy . Posting 4 - 0 records for the tournament with solid performances were: Nate Turner, Gage Anderson and Cody Fulleton.
