The instrumental music program at O’Dea includes the O’Dea Band, Drum Line, Chamber Ensemble, and Jazz Combo.
The O’Dea Band is a versatile ensemble that adapts to varied situations. Performance opportunities include sporting events, assemblies, liturgies, fundraisers, concerts, and festivals. The literature for band is chosen from songs, concert literature, and liturgical music written for or adapted to the high school pep band and jazz band instrumentation. Various genres are studied including rock, pop, hip-hop, rap, Latin, funk, and jazz. Skills developed include pitch and tone, sight-reading, rhythm, style and genre, symphonic tone production, rudiments, scales, articulation, breathing, critical thinking and listening, concert etiquette, and rehearsal technique. Students will develop their knowledge in music theory, history, general music appreciation skills, and performance concepts and styles.
Drum Line is a subset of students from the band making another performance ensemble. Percussion students in the band are required to participate. Drum Line rehearses once per week during zero period every Wednesday and as necessary in order to prepare for a performance. No experience is necessary to join Drum Line. Drum Line performance opportunities include sporting events, assemblies, concerts, and during house games.
The Chamber Ensemble is a select group of band students who perform during liturgies with the Liturgical Choir. The literature is chosen from the rich tradition of liturgical and classical music. The Chamber Ensemble rehearses after school every Thursday and as necessary in order to prepare for a performance. Students are selected by instructor approval.
The Jazz Combo is a select group of band students who perform for various school functions such as the Bite of O’Dea, the Italian Dinner, and the POSH Auction events. The literature is chosen from jazz standards and other songs arranged for jazz combo including instructor and student arranged material. Students are selected by instructor approval through an audition process.
